The people of Hida Takayama are grateful for the outpouring of concern for Japan from our friends around the world regarding the recent Tohoku earthquake. We offer our sincere condolences to all those affected by the crisis.

Tourists can visit Hida Takayama with peace of mind. Business at hotels, services at the Chubu (Nagoya), Kansai (Osaka), Toyama and Komatsu (Hokuriku) airports, and other transportation services are continuing as usual.

Various events are also going ahead as planned, including the annual Spring Takayama Festival held from April 14 to 15. We are confident that Hida Takayama will leave you completely charmed.

Hida Takayama is doing its utmost to assist relief efforts and restoration work in the disaster-stricken areas of Japanfs Tohoku region, sending supplies and dispatching personnel. Morning Markets
Starting in the Edo period (about 200 years ago) as markets of rice, mulberry trees, and flowers, and developed by the middle of the Meiji period (about 100 years ago) when farmersf wives began to bring vegetables, these markets came to be known as eMorning Markets.f There are two sites; Jinyamae Morning Market and Miyagawa Morning Market. Fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, etc., can be enjoyed year round. (Summer - 6:00am`12:00pm, winter - 7:00am`12:00pm)

Spring Hida Takayama Festival
One of the three most beautiful festivals of Japan:
twelve gorgeous decorative floats are pulled in a festival procession on the red-colored Nakabashi Bridge
and Shinmei-dori (Street); in particular, karakuri marionettes operated for god on three floats
(Sanba-so, Ryujin-tai, and Shakkyo-tai floats) are the highlight of the festival.
In the evening, a night festival continues while festival floats are led by the festival procession,
which parades through the streets.

Autumn Takayama Festival
An extremely elegant and beautiful festival which is among the three most beautiful festivals of Japan.
The highlight of the festival is gorgeous floats described as gmoving Youmeimon
(the famous, gorgeously-decorated gate to Toshogu Shrine in Nikko)h
and marionettes skillfully operated on the floats.
